Sustainability — Dubai Alternative’s Environmental & Community Commitments

Sustainability & Community Impact

At Dubai Alternative, we operate on a simple principle: we must be dedicated stewards of the natural and cultural paradise we introduce to our clients. For us, luxury is not opulent consumption; it is the privilege of experiencing Indonesia’s profound beauty and vibrant culture in a way that actively contributes to their preservation. Our commitment to sustainability is not a separate policy but is woven into the fabric of our operations and our partner selection process.

Environmental Stewardship

We are committed to minimizing the environmental footprint of our clients’ activities and contributing to the conservation of Indonesia’s unique ecosystems.

  • Carbon Offsetting Program: We have partnered with Jejak.in, a leading Indonesian carbon offset platform, to calculate the carbon footprint of all client-related travel, including private flights, yacht charters, and ground transport. We offer clients the ability to offset this footprint through certified local reforestation and conservation projects.
  • Marine Conservation Contribution: A dedicated 2% of our revenue from all marine-based experiences (e.g., yacht charters in Komodo or Raja Ampat) is donated directly to our conservation partners, the Coral Triangle Center in Bali and the Komodo Survival Program, to support their vital work in marine biodiversity protection and anti-poaching efforts.
  • Zero Single-Use Plastic Policy: We mandate that all our primary hospitality and transport partners adhere to a strict no-single-use-plastic policy. We provide all clients with high-quality reusable water bottles and containers upon arrival.
  • Sustainable Partner Prioritization: We give preference to hotels and resorts with recognized environmental certifications such as EarthCheck or Green Globe, which demonstrate a serious commitment to energy efficiency, water conservation, and waste management.

Community Empowerment & Cultural Preservation

Our business model is designed to create tangible, positive impacts on the local communities that make Indonesia so special.

  • Local Employment Mandate: We contractually require our key operational partners (villas, transport providers) to maintain a minimum of 85% local Indonesian employment, with a strong preference for staff from the immediate local village or district. We also audit for fair wage practices and professional development opportunities.
  • Community Development Fund: Through our parent, Juara Holding Group, we contribute to a dedicated community fund. Our current project involves co-funding a waste management and recycling facility in the village of Pecatu, near the popular Uluwatu area, to help manage the impact of tourism.
  • Support for Traditional Crafts: We facilitate authentic, respectful cultural experiences for our clients, such as private viewings with master artisans. We arrange for the direct, fair-trade purchase of goods like traditional Tenun ikat textiles from Sumba or silverwork from Celuk village in Bali, ensuring the economic benefits flow directly to the creators.

Governance & Transparency

We believe in accountability. Starting in 2024, we will publish an annual Impact Report detailing the funds donated to our conservation partners, the total carbon tonnage offset, and the progress of our community development projects. This commitment to transparency is an extension of our core editorial values. By choosing our services, our clients become partners in a more sustainable and equitable vision of luxury travel.

Imagine the sunrise painting the ancient peaks of Raja Ampat, casting a golden glow over waters teeming with life, a spectacle preserved not just for you, but for generations to come. At Dubai Alternative, we believe true luxury lies in experiencing Indonesia’s unparalleled natural beauty and vibrant cultures in a way that actively safeguards their future.

Safeguarding Indonesia’s Breathtaking Biodiversity

Indonesia stands as a global epicenter of biodiversity, an archipelago nation comprising over 17,500 islands that harbors over 17% of the world’s species. From the dense, emerald rainforests of Sumatra to the vibrant, kaleidoscopic coral gardens of the Coral Triangle, this profound natural heritage is the very soul of the luxury experiences offered by Dubai Alternative. Our commitment extends far beyond minimizing our carbon footprint; we actively engage in initiatives that protect and restore these critical ecosystems, ensuring their resilience against environmental pressures.

Our focus on marine conservation is particularly acute, given Indonesia’s status at the heart of the Coral Triangle. We partner with local NGOs and scientific organizations dedicated to coral reef restoration and marine ecosystem protection. Clients traveling with Dubai Alternative contribute directly to efforts that reduce plastic pollution, participate in ethical diving and snorkeling guidelines, and support initiatives like the establishment of marine protected areas. For instance, in regions like Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site, our operations strictly adhere to guidelines that protect its unique population of Komodo dragons and its spectacular underwater world. Indonesia’s coral reefs, often called the Amazon of the seas, span more than 50,000 square kilometers, and our goal is to help preserve every vibrant inch.

On land, we champion the preservation of Indonesia’s iconic terrestrial habitats. This includes supporting rainforest conservation projects that protect critical habitats for endangered species such as orangutans, Sumatran tigers, and rhinos. Dubai Alternative works with lodges and tour operators that practice responsible waste management, utilize renewable energy sources where possible, and actively participate in reforestation efforts. By choosing Dubai Alternative, clients become silent partners in these vital conservation endeavors, experiencing Indonesia’s wild heart knowing their journey contributes positively to its enduring health.

Empowering Local Communities and Honoring Cultural Heritage

The richness of Indonesia extends far beyond its natural landscapes; it is deeply embedded in the diverse tapestry of its over 300 ethnic groups and their ancient traditions. At Dubai Alternative, we believe that authentic luxury travel must not only respect but also actively empower the local communities who are the custodians of this extraordinary cultural heritage. Our approach ensures that the economic benefits of tourism flow directly to the people, fostering sustainable livelihoods and celebrating unique cultural expressions across the archipelago.

We prioritize fair economic practices by directly employing local guides, drivers, and staff, ensuring they receive equitable wages and opportunities for professional development. Furthermore, Dubai Alternative is committed to sourcing goods and services from local businesses, from the fresh produce served in our exquisite dining experiences to the handcrafted souvenirs available to our clients. Through direct partnerships, Dubai Alternative has helped support over 70 distinct local businesses and artisan collectives across the archipelago, ensuring that the economic impact of tourism genuinely enriches the communities visited. This direct investment strengthens local economies, reduces reliance on external resources, and fosters a sense of pride and ownership in the tourism experience.

Preserving Indonesia’s vibrant cultural heritage is integral to our mission. We facilitate respectful, immersive cultural encounters that go beyond mere observation, allowing clients to engage with local traditions, arts, and ceremonies in meaningful ways. This might involve participating in a traditional Balinese cooking class, witnessing ancient Javanese batik artistry in Yogyakarta, or experiencing the unique funeral rituals of Tana Toraja. By supporting local artisans, performers, and cultural educators, we help ensure these invaluable traditions are passed down through generations. Our itineraries are meticulously crafted to provide authentic experiences that honor local customs and contribute to the long-term preservation of Indonesia’s invaluable human heritage.
